Tattoos
One of my favorite things to do upon meeting new people is watch their faces when they notice I have a tattoo on my forearm (I actually have one on both forearms, but one is white ink text and most people don’t see it unless they’re really looking).
A lot of people will just sort of look and not say anything, and it’s obvious they want to ask but are afraid to say the wrong...

I’m wondering if anyone has read through either text and come up with an idea of how many times believers are ordered to kill, versus how many times they are ordered to be merciful or kind. The numbers are always interesting to me.

newwavefeminism:
I don’t understand the resistance within feminism for some feminists to accept critiques on feminism. Telling feminists of color that white feminists “just can’t help it” or “just don’t understand” WOC enough to write about feminism from anything other than a straight,…

Tumblr announced today a plan to ban from the website blogs that actively promote self-harm, e.g., anorexia, bulimia, self-mutilation, or suicide. The new policy will likely take effect starting next week.
Well that’s interesting. Not sure how I feel about it, really.. but I wonder how effectively this will be enforced, and how quickly thinspo/pro-ana bloggers...

Star Trek and aliteracy
One of my favorite things about the internet is that people who have no bearing on a conversation can come charging in like rhinos and completely miss the point/an obvious joke in their rush to be the smartest/rightest/bestest/brightest asshole in the room.
Did I say “my favorite”? I meant “the most annoying.”
It’s a wise move to actually read the conversations...

TW for sexual harassment/rape
So I had this really weird flashback today, to all these different instances of sexual harassment that I experienced while I was in high school. The first one I remembered was from when I was a freshman - a senior who I was in the marching band with had been flirting with me. The next day in the hallway, a bunch of his friends dumped a box of condoms onto me. I...

Okay, forget everything I have ever complained about or told you to do, politically. Forget if you don’t read political posts. Stop. WATCH/READ THIS RIGHT NOW.
For those of you who for some reason cannot or do not want to watch the video, allow me to summarize. Right now there is a law that has passed the Virginia legislature that would mandate a trans-vaginal ultrasound for...

THEY ARE CHARMING

Just throwing this out there: I have had a trans-vaginal ultrasound. It is as far from sex as being consensually penetrated by a vaguely phallic object as it is possible to be. I cannot imagine the trauma of having that procedure done without my consent.

So Santorum doesn’t think that amniocentesis should be covered by insurance because when there’s a problem “in most cases physicians recommend abortion.” (Not true.) Most people who get amnios do so because a prenatal blood tests have showed that there may be a chromosomal abnormality (or for…

I’m posting this because it was on my tear-off Office calendar yesterday — only the most appropriate quote of the day given the contraception fiasco yesterday.

Blech to the commenter who says she’s pro-abstinence because it “keeps self-worth intact.” I mean, yes, sure, if that’s what you want to do with your body, more power to you. However, my vagina is not where I keep my self-worth, and thinking that not having sex means you can look down your nose at people who do have sex is ridiculous.
I have no problem with people who...
Tarsier, not so silent after all
animalstalk:
The Phillipine tarsier is tiny, with big eyes, sweet little hands and apparently a big mouth. Well, they emit ultrasounds unheard by humans ears. Ultrasound (above 20 kilohertz) is a range that cetaceans, cats, and some bats and rodents use. It’s the first time researchers have found a primate that only vocalizes in ultrasound. The question now is, what are the tarsiers saying?

Can we all just agree to dispense with any catchphrase, ‘witty’ saying or political statement that begins, “Real men” or “Real women”?

Next time I finish up an all-day research binge will someone please come take the internet away from me and make me play Skyrim until I stop feeling like I want to fight everything? Because I want to fight everything.
